O Frade

88117571_106347944306417_5113792198118211584_o.jpgThere are delicious meals that I keep in mind because they are absolutely phenomenal and Frade is in my top 3, without any doubt.

This was a restaurant that I wanted to try for a long time, and I'm going to jump to the "end": it is divine. It deserves more than a visit. There is so much to taste.

It's very Portuguese to eat in taverns where the counter is the centerpiece of a meal filled with dishes with distinctive flavors and textures, some very characteristic depending on the region of Portugal.

O Frade is the prime example of the new modernity of a Portuguese tavern where typical dishes from Alentejo (specifically Beja), Trás os Montes and even Algarve are recreated. Located on Calçada da Ajuda, right next to Palácio de Belém, the restaurant was created by cousins ​​Sérgio Frade and Carlos Afonso, in honor of their grandparents who had a tavern with the same name.

My girlfriend and I decided stayed at the counter - cus that's where all the action is! - and ordered several dishes to taste several options and started with gazpacho with Iberian ham and beef heart tomato.

I'm a loyal fan of gazpacho, although it is not a dish I eat regularly and it was great with many flavors that went altogether with the ham, which could only be of the best quality.

A cheese plate with figs and nuts served to further whet your appetite. The cheeses are of excellent quality as you would expect and combine well with the excellent wines that have been presented to us.

A significant detail must be mentioned: the bread. For those who like bread like me, you will be delighted with what is served at Frade. It is excellent.

Next came muxama with scrambled eggs. I had never eaten muxama so I didn't discern what to expect. The tuna is dry and salty with a rigid consistency and contrasts with the softness of the eggs which makes the dish more delicious.

We also tried coelho de coentrada which was my favorite dish. It was refined, tasty, spicy, well drizzled with oil

The doses are perfect to share. 

All the dishes are very well prepared and there is a concern of the employees with the customers and the experience they are providing. This makes all the difference for a foodie and a restaurant that manages to encompass the best that Portuguese pot food has to offer with the sophistication of cooks willing to assume risks, providing an experience close to a high-quality bistro.

A Special Performance by Run The Jewels

Run The Jewels are a regular presence here and it's no accident. They're currently the best rapper duo in the world. Each album is a masterpiece filled with social and political comments from a country (United States of America) on the verge of collective madness.

Killer Mike and El-P presented their latest work - RTJ4 - at a live concert, broadcast by Adult Swim, with the aim of encouraging fans to register to vote as well as support the ACLU.

The livestream had special guests such as Pharrell Williams and Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, Mavis Staples, Josh Homme.

Television shows with amazing soundtracks

Music helps set the tone on screen and adds to the drama. The best TV show moments are usually paired with a song that sucks you in. Whether it’s a moment of triumph or tragedy, music on TV creates a mood that can linger long after the episode ends.

Alice Smith - I Put a Spell On You

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | Nowadays it's rare to be surprised by the cover of a well-known song. There is very little that can be invented with originality and inspiration. That's why I was quite amazed by Alice Smith's version of a classic by Nina Simone, "I Put a Spell On You", during the most recent episode of Lovecraft Country (a fantastic show that should be part of your must-see list for this year).
It is an unforgettable version, a haunting interpretation of one of Nina Simone's best-known songs, sung with an emotional force that manages to capture the essence of an obsession.

Kai Lisboa

Some excellent opportunities can be seized in complicated situations, even during a pandemic like the one we have been experiencing.

It was this thought that led to a change of executive chef at the Japanese restaurant Kai Lisboa, in Torre de Picoas, and consequently a change in the dishes.
With the departure of the former chef (who ended up staying in the USA due to the pandemic), the kitchen was trusted to Chef João Francisco, who has an enviable professional career that has taken him some of the best restaurants in Lisbon such as Eleven, Bica do SapatoArola, Midori, and, recently, Tarara.

One thing is already certain, thanks to this renewed culinary vision and skills, the reopening is an amazing success to the point of being considered one of the ten best restaurants in Lisbon by Forbes magazine. A huge feat considering it reopened to the public in August.

This is the most outstanding quality of traditional Japanese cuisine that you can experience in Lisbon. Hands down. Everything that is chosen and cooked in this restaurant is designed to provide the best gastronomic experience for sushi lovers while demonstrating the enormous quality of national products since most of the ingredients are purchased from local traders in the 31 de Janeiro market.

There is a sense of greatness when you arrive. The luxurious decor without being tacky, the layout of the counter where you can observe the work of the chef while eating freshly sliced ​​and prepared sushi. There are also uni, oysters, spicy tuna and crab tacos, calf and tuna tataki, tempura shrimp salad and black cod yakitori with miso. Every single dish is cooked with passion and presented by the chef with a rare effortless sensation that this is a person who loves what he does.

It's easy to talk about something you loved so much as I did after a sumptuous meal at Kai's.
