Cais do Sodré is today one of the most vibrant areas in Lisbon with several different restaurants, entertainment spaces such as bars and discotheques and a cosmopolitan environment worthy of any major European city.
So it is not surprising that the SOI fits perfectly in this area.

With a menu inspired by the street restaurants of the big Asian cities, the dishes are not defined by borders but by the different cultures of the Asian continent such as Japanese, Thai, Chinese or Korean.

The space is attractive for any Instagram photography with neon lights and wallpapers with Asian themes. With the terrace in front of the open doors, it captures the attention of anyone passing in front of the restaurant.

The card mirrors the identity of the SOI with baos, grills, wok, curry dishes, kebabs or ramen. A preliminary note, SOI does not hide its appreciation for spicy food so be careful to choose what you want to eat. Not that it's a problem unless you really don't like spicy food.

The first choice was Korean chicken wings, fried in rice flour and sautéed in spicy Korean sauce. I venture to say they were the best chicken wings I've ever had in Lisbon. Tasty, creamy, spicy enough.

Then came a pork bao with cucumber pickle, mango, fried garlic and hoisin sauce that was just as delicious. The dishes are cooked with affection and this is evident in the taste. I tend to compare the bao with the Boa-Bao (an amazing restaurant) and these are nothing behind. The products are fresh, well seasoned and with each bite, you can taste the ingredients that give soul to the SOI without looking like an amalgam of products placed in a dish.

This restaurant stays in memory for its creativity and flavors.

Will Butler - Surrender

15.07.20 | Sounds & Flavours

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | After Friday Night, the first album from Will Butler,  today he announced that he is ready to follow up with another solo record: Generations, which is set for release on September 25 via Merge.

The album’s lead single, “Surrender.” is an upbeat tune, driven by an acoustic guitar pulse and call-and-answer vocals between Butler and backup singers that definitely echoes the big “oh-oh-oh” singalong aspects of Arcade Fire’s music.

Quarantine concerts | Sampha - Down The Rabbit Hole (2018)

13.07.20 | Sounds & Flavours

It's been months since you hear new music from Sampha. The British artist has been "silent" ever since he released Process in 2017, an album that elevated him to an international star with the mix of neo-soul and electronics, in a little-explored way at the time.

It was no accident that he ended up winning a Mercury Prize.

Until he returns with new music, listen to Sampha's fantastic voice live at this concert recorded at the Down The Rabbit Hole festival in 2018.

Name a Track | Francisco Chilão Rocha

09.07.20 | Sounds & Flavours

A geeky fellow, he understands how incredible movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse or Avengers: Endgame are.

Calm but insightful, Francisco Chilão Rocha has chosen the right profession to deal with villains while wearing the cape worthy of a hero. Obviously, I'm saying he's a lawyer.

This is his Name a Track

That reminds you of someone

That reminds you of a place

That turns you on

You listen when you’re sad

You listen with your friends

That pumps you up for a night out

That goes well with a glass of wine

That’s been with you since your quarantine

You wish you had written

You haven’t seen performed live

By your favorite artist

You’re going to listen when the quarantine is over

Tips to eat the perfect oyster

07.07.20 | Sounds & Flavours

The first time I tried oysters was many years ago in a restaurant in Lisbon, which was not even known for having oysters. The taste of saltwater mixed with lemon juice and the freshness of the oyster remained on my palate until today.

For a long time, I didn't try this mollusk again until two weeks ago when I went to have a snack in one of the best seafood restaurants in Lisbon and tasted that characteristic taste again. After that, on a day on the beach with friends, I had again a good dose of oysters with incredible quality.

For many people, eating oysters can be something intimidating, when in fact there's not a right or wrong way to taste it. So here are some tips that might help.

Always begin by loosening the oyster. You can use a small fork or knife. Bring the oyster shell to the lip of your mouth and tip slightly.

When the oysters have been shucked, try not to spill any of the water that will remain in the cup along with the oyster.

The bigger your oyster the more meaty and tasty it will be.

A bad oyster will smell bad. If it does smell like that, don't eat it.

You can swallow an oyster whole or bite it so the full flavor profile can be experienced.

The best way to taste an oyster is with drops of lemon juice. You can try other sauces, although I don't think it's the best way to try it.

Ennio Morricone - The ecstasy of gold

06.07.20 | Sounds & Flavours

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | The Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone has died at the age of 91. His influence defined spaghetti western soundtracks and created a whole new musical world that spawned beyond the cinema, marking a cultural generation that will not forget his name. Recently, the maestro had participated in films by Quentin Tarantino, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Terrence Malick and his peak was The Ecstasy of Gold, a song that marked the iconic film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of 1966 with Clint Eastwood.

Café Janis

As I entered Cafe Janis, the feeling I had was as if I were in another city, in another vibe.

The cool decoration, with French posters that complement each other with the purifying presence of the various plants spread throughout the Janis, makes this café one of the most original spaces in Lisbon to have a coffee, dinner, or try brunch on a sunny day.

With the visual aspect clearly victorious, Café Janis does not leave behind the most important, the quality of the food. With several vegetarian dishes that have a lot of prominence, the menu is comprehensive enough to please any customer looking for a lighter meal such as salads and toasts but also those who want a fuller and bolder meal such as calamari or meatballs.

The brunch is also very sought after, both by tourists and by Lisboners, who take advantage of the esplanade to catch some sun or are amazed by the cozy decoration inside.

My experience at Café Janis was quite good. I really liked the taste and texture of the meal, which included perfect scrambled eggs, mushrooms with pepper, grilled halloumi, roasted tomatoes, and spinach and toast. My girlfriend tried soft egg in creamy yogurt with zaatar, mixed with marinated artichokes, crushed avocado with mint, and toasted focaccia. If it sounds good, imagine how good it tasted.

Kanye West - Wash Us In The Blood feat. Travis Scott

02.07.20 | Sounds & Flavours

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | With references to religion and systematic racism felt in the United States, the new video for "Wash Us in The Blood" from Kanye West is a strong statement from the rapper, who has been criticized for his support and friendship with Donald Trump. The video shows more recent images of protests against the death of black people at the hands of the authorities.
The song will be on Kanye's new album, "God's Country", which has no debut date yet. The clip of "Wash Us in the Blood" also uses video game clips, computer animation simulating space scenes, and videos of performances and speeches by icons of the black community.

It's an amazing song. I dare to say one of his best songs in the last few years.
