Located right in the heart of Lisbon (Chiado), Kaffeehaus almost shares walls with one of the capital’s most famous theaters, São Carlos. It feels like the perfect cafe to sit down, enjoy a book or read a magazine, forgetting the hassle of everyday life, but with a Viennese sense of style and cuisine.

This is an Austrian café, so that makes sense.

The space was bought and designed by two Austrians who fell in love with Lisbon and brought their culture into the heart of the city. It’s one of the coolest cafes in Lisbon, with the plus of wonderful food and an awesome atmosphere. The decoration is a big part of Kaffeehaus, where the walls are filled with movie and theater posters that blend with those of concerts and events.

With this kind of mood, it’s easy to guess the cuisine provided: Austrian and german meals with Frankfurt sausages in the center. The meat comes from the butcher of one of the owner’s father. You can choose from six different types, served with spiced potato wedges and accompanied by beautiful tarragon mustard. I tried a couple and they don’t disappoint.

You can also try the brunch, which is a must. They have four to choose from accompanied by Austrian pastry, cheese,, sausage, yogurt with muesli and scrambled eggs.

Every day there’s something new written on the chalkboard over the counter, so you won’t be bored at the second or third visit.

I’ve always lived in Lisbon and Kaffeehaus has been one of my favorite places to hang out. It’s very well located, has a great vibe from Portuguese and tourists, food is amazing. What else can you ask for?

How to make Blackberry Mojito

28.01.20 | Sounds & Flavours

Although it’s still cold outside, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have some fun inside. This is a very simple and tasty recipe for Cuba’s most famous cocktail but with a twist, a Blackberry Mojito. The whole point is don’t be obvious.

You can check the recipe in Delish.

A piece of advice: don’t crush the blackberries, gently press them with the mind to release the flavors smoothly. This is a great drink to try before a meal or in the middle of a cozy Netflix & chill afternoon.

070 Shake - Guilty Conscience

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | Kanye’s most prolific protégé 070 Shake is making her expected debut with “Modus Vivendi”, a record that is best described by the title translated “Way of Life”. Although she’s been gaining buzz since 2018, it seems this will be the year that she breakthroughs the limelight. Her music is a balance between dark and light, with her voice ranging from harsh words to tender vocals, embracing a musical chaos that she enjoys. Her dreamy lyrics encapsulated what we mostly feel throughout relationships either it’s pain, love, anger, happiness.

Nick Murphy - Blood And

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | I'm going to say it without prejudice. This is one hell of an album. I know we're only in the beginning of 2020, but Nick Murphy's Music in Silence is a precious gem that hits us right in the feels. For years as Chet Faker, the Australian musician decided it was time to hear an inner voice, becoming himself in a personal and artistic sense and giving us some of the very best music out there. This new record, available exclusively on Calm, is a stirring example of discovery and healing transformed into sounds. Without voices, the piano is at the center of this journey. I found myself crying without warning, happy with no reason to or simply at peace because it felt right.

I cannot stress how much I love this album. Please listen to it.

MOULES & BEER

Moules & Beer - Rua 4 da Infantaria, 29D, 1250-268, Lisboa

This is a straightforward restaurant. Mussels accompanied by beer, wine or gin. As simple as that, although it’s not that simple of course.

Moules & Beer opened in 2013, as a brother to Moules & Gin, located in Cascais. The concept is mostly the same, imported from Belgium, where mussels are a specialty and a classic dish. Just picture large steaming pots laden with mussels coated with a white wine sauce and drizzled with fresh herbs and vegetables.

Once considered the poor man’s meat, mussels are now sometimes referred to as ‘black gold’ of the sea.

With simple interior design, Moules & Beer is a restaurant that relies on the specialty of the mussels. There are 10 different sauces that you can choose from and every week there’s a new special sauce. Of course, there is beer. A lot. From Belgium, Germany, Holland, and Portugal, you have an enormous variety of craft beer to choose from.

I arrived around dinnertime, the place wasn’t too crowded and the first thing that caught my eye was that the place was unpretentious. Simple as some might say. I thought it missed a touch of warmth.

74944196_3142878652395048_9001020476134260736_o.jp

The meal started with a plate of fried mussels with sweet chilly sauce and mayonnaise which was a good start because the mussels were great and crispy. The only thing I found lame was that the sweet chilly sauce was not homemade. I know this because I have the same sauce at home, bought at a supermarket.

Next, a bucket with mussels and pesto. First things first, the bucket has a lot of these little ones. My girlfriend and I made an effort to finish the enormous supply of food because it was tasty, well seasoned and yummy.

Although you have cutlery at your disposal, don’t be a snob and eat with your hands. It’s the most effective way and honestly, no one will care.

Overall, I liked the experience, based on the simplicity of the food. It’s mussels. There’s no way around it. The variety of sauces to choose from gives the customer the opportunity to have different experiences, because it will taste different every time. They have to be well cooked and seasoned but I’m already expecting that if it’s the prime ingredient of the restaurant.

Also, It’s a cheap meal. We paid around €11 each.

I’ll try it again for sure.

The 1975 - Me & You Together Song

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | It seems the upcoming album from The 1975 is a mix of punk, pop, rock songs that embodies different musical DNA. After releasing "People" and "State frail of mind", the band is back with a new single from Notes On A Conditional Form called "Me & You Together Song", where we're treated to an upbeat lullaby concerning love and romance. It's a welcome back to the past of The 1975, where songs have soft meanings and that's just ok.

Jungle - Jungle (2014) | By Olga Ferreira-Hilário

17.01.20 | Sounds & Flavours

Records (1).png

This is the initial take of this column and every beginning should start with a bang.

My first guest is a good friend of mine. I’ve known her for two years and since we’ve met our friendship has truly blossomed, like true friendships should.

I’m talking about Olga Ferreira-Hilário. She’s the best hairdresser in the country, owner of Slash Creative Hair Studio and one of the coolest, stylish people I know.

Funny, loving, smart is not enough to describe her.

With an exquisite taste in music, I dared her to write about a record that made a mark on her life.

Here it is.

“Four years (2016) ago I was at a festival in Lisbon called Lisb-on. It’s an excellent festival, because it is tiny (still) and normally not excessively crowded. One band that I really wanted to see was Jungle. They just had launched their first album called Jungle” the year before, and I was particularly curious to see them. I don’t know if it was the weather, the company or the ambiance, but it was one of the most amazing concerts that I have ever seen. I was in the front row and had lots of space to dance. The band played all the songs from their record and everybody was just in such a great mood that you could feel everyone’s cheerful energy in the air. From that day on, every time I hear the album it just takes me back to that thrilling moment. It has become one of those albums I listen to when I need a “lift me up” or just want to get hyped for a night out”.

Aresta 007 - Po:ti / Riedox

January is a goddamn long month, isn’t it?

It seems like you’re working and working and working, without breaks. Well, I have a suggestion to blow off some steam.

On the 17th, Ministerium Club will receive another Aresta party, with two special guests: Point and Riedox. The two Hungarian DJs will perform for the first time in Portugal and we know they’ll bring the finest and most versatile house music that’s being produced in eastern Europe.

Besides them, the party will also hear records from Gear and Straka.

If your thing is dancing and tech house music, by all means, let yourself go on the dancefloor.

Recently, I did an interview for A Cabine with Jorge Caiado, one of the most prolific DJs in Portugal and owner of the record label Carpet & Snares, about the release of his album "Time & Space".

In the making since 2017, the LP is the culmination of a long creative process that embodies different music aesthetics with a futuristic vision of electronic music.

Common & Tom Misch - My Fancy Free Future Love (Tom Misch remix)

13.01.20 | Sounds & Flavours

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 | Hip-hop veteran Common and new jazz star Tom Misch? Yes, please. The British singer-songwriter gives us a smooth remix of "My Fancy Free Future Love", originally sampled from Freedom Express's "Fancy Free" track. The bass lines and piano grooves mix in perfection with Common's creative bars about love and life. This is probably my favorite track of 2020 so far. And if you've never seen Tom Misch live, you can catch him in concert on NOS Alive 2020!

Fauna e Flora - Rua da Esperança, Lisboa

Lots of natural vegetation, mini palm trees, cacti and other greenery hanging from flower boxes. That’s what you see when you enter the second Fauna e Flora, in Anjos.

The first one, in Santos, is a must-visit place for those who enjoy tasty breakfasts and amazing brunches. Since it opened its doors in 2017, Fauna e Flora became a great addition to every list of the best places to hang out in Lisbon.

So, it’s no surprise that when the owners opened this second restaurant, it became an overnight success. With more light, charisma, aesthetic, seats, this second Fauna e Flora has everything you can expect and much more.

My girlfriend and I weren’t sure how long we would wait for a lazy Saturday brunch and to our surprise, we didn’t wait at all. The nice barista spotted a vacant table and took us there with a smile on his face. It was crowded but not noisy. One thing I felt is that they set the tables in a way that if it has lots of people, no one is sitting right next to each other. You have space to chill, talk and enjoy the food.

Although the menu is long, it is not complicated. Everything seemed fantastic and choosing wasn’t easy. I picked a toast with smoked salmon, ricotta cheese, sous vide eggs, cherry tomatoes, arugula, micro leaves, seeds, and lime zest and two small cheeseburgers with basil mayonnaise, tomato, fresh leaves and seeds bread and flora chips. My girlfriend chose a grilled Portobello mushroom with roasted layers of tomato, crispy bacon, parmesan cheese & purple onion with fresh avocado slices, micro leaves, seeds and an avocado toast with sous vide eggs.

It’s easy to be surprised with food like this because it sounds amazing but often doesn't taste as good as it looks. This was not the case. It was freakishly good. Everything. The ingredients are fresh, cooked on the spot, with perfect seasoning. I really loved the salmon toast. I think it was one of the best I’ve ever eaten.

81688004_1446806305494716_3582235696775036928_n

Overall, Fauna e Flora is the real deal. Every inch of the restaurant is Instagram friendly, it has a very, very cool vibe, it’s spacious, and the food matches the visual porn on the table. It’s also a restaurant where brunch is available at every hour and a bunch of options that you can try in different settings.

I know I will come back, that’s for sure.
